Holding of regular elections to form new governments can be considered as democratic minimum at least for ensuring procedural democracy. In India democracy is translated into the expression of political participations through national, state and local elections. The study of these elections has gradually occupied a significant place in the domain of social science research. But it has always been a challenging task in a country like India because of its geographical area and size of population with all possible diversities. It is not even possible for an individual scholar or researcher to carry out any comprehensive study of the elections of the whole country.
Through this book an attempt is made to understand the trends of electoral politics and political participation of the state of Assam as a federal unit of Union of India taking 1985 election as a reference.
